DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT PEN-FRIENDS WHICH WERE
SO PROMINENT IN ONE TIME?
I HAVE ONE
In the year of 2010, when I was in 10th grade, I met one friend called Jigme from very a funny route. Once, I borrowed a sim-card from my childhood friend Ugyen. One evening I got a call from a person named Jigme which was already saved in the sim-card.
‘Hello.’ I answered.
‘What are you doing?’ the soft voice of man asked
me.
‘I am not Ugyen. I borrowed her Sim-card. I will
send you her new number.’ I answered without any questions being asked.
‘Not needed. Can we be friends?’ He directly
discarded my suggestions. I felt weird at once. I thought how flirty this man
must be. ‘Why you don’t need her number? You are her friend not mine. You are
completely stranger to me.’ I was bewildered with his offer. Being friend with
him was not a problem but discarding his friendship with my friend was a
problem for me.
“If she wants to be my friend forever, she will not
give this Sim-card to you. If she had considered me as her special friend, she
will make an effort to call me from her new number. If she had considered me as
one important friend, she would have asked you my number even if she has
forgotten my number. Did she ever ask you my number?” He directly asked me
question in disheartened tone. I could not lie. My friend had never talked
about him to me before. She had never asked about him or his number.
“She did not ask me but I am sure she would have
forgotten. Sometimes, we forget even if someone is our special friend.” I made
a way to convince him.
“I don’t forget my special friend. Do you forget?”
He asked me emphasizing his emotions with his utterance.
“I do. I am a person who forgets important things
frequently. But don’t worry, I have her number. I will send you right away.” I
confidently stated.
“I don’t want it. Whatever, let’s forget about her.
What is your name?” He asked me with giggling sound.
“Why you don’t want her number? Why?” I asked him.
“No more conversation about her. I don’t have any
reasons. Please don’t ask me about her anymore, please. Anyway what is your
name?” He asked me again.
“I am Thinley. I will talk about you with her tomorrow.
Don’t be disheartened Mr. Jigme.” I giggled as well.
“Will you be my friend?” He asked me weirdly. I
paused for a moment.
“Of course, we can be friends.” I remarked
unwillingly.
“Alright then. Promise me one thing?” He promptly
asked me.
“What?” I asked him in curiosity.
“Promise me that you will never ask about me to
Ugyen. Promise me that you will not give my number to Ugyen. Promise me that
you will never talk about her from today.” He asked me to promise him but it
was difficult for me to decide. I remained silent for few minutes when he was
busy making sounds of hello time and again.
I replied him after few minutes, my words filled
with uncomfortable feelings, “You are making me villain. I don’t want to be
villain in between friends. I have to talk to her about you. Are you guys in
relationship? Are you guys having some relationship issues? You should solve it
without involving me.”
“Don’t misunderstand me. We don’t have any special
sort of connections or relationship. We met just few days ago. I guess, she did
not like me even as friends. May be that’s the reason why she has changed her
number or maybe she would have some personal reasons. So I don’t want to
disturb her. Why don’t you understand? If someone is not interested, can we
force them? Can we….?” He asked me with valid reasons.
“We can’t.” I answered.
“So……?”
“Alright, I understood. No further Arguments.” I
quickly ended the further discussion.
“Thank you for understanding me. I am Jigme
Wangchuk. Currently, I am here in Samtse College of Education. I am taking
mathematic subject as subject of specialization. I am first year in the
college. I wish to be your good friend, if possible till we die. Friends
Forever.” He giggled displaying his hesitation. I smiled to myself hearing his
giggling sound.
“It is your turn to introduce now.” He offered me
time to talk about myself to him.
I laughed for a moment but I had to answer him, “My
name is Thinley Zangmo. I am studying in 10th Grade in Kanglung
Middle Secondary School. I am cousin sister of your Friend Ugyen Chezom.”
“Alright. Nice to meet you. I am hoping to know you
more from here. Thank you so much for accepting my friendship. Let’s be a good
friend. Now I shall end this call. Take care.” He ended the call right after my
answer of ‘OK’.
Our beautiful bond of friendship started from there.
It was complete an accidental and that accidental meeting made us closest
friends when the time moved on. I did not promise him verbally that I will not
talk about him to my cousin Ugyen but I did fulfill his promise when she was not
asking anything about him. The moment of not asking and sharing about Jigme to my
cousin sister would define me with cruelty and mean but I had never wanted to be
intruder in their friendship when both of them did not care to ask about each
other. Do you believe in Fate and Destiny? I solely kept
everything for that believe and did not dare to ask or talk about them to any
one of them. The years passed by. Jigme
and Ugyen totally forgot each other but I continued chatting with in Message, calling each other for almost
daily and I remember he was the one to call me frequently and I am still
thankful to him. I don’t remember having various sources of social media to
connect us in that particular period of beginning of our friendship but as time
passed by we could connect more from Facebook and Wechat. When friends are not
seen to each other, we tend to lose or forget the bond of friendship in between
the years but that did not happen with us.
Even though I was reluctant to keep strong bond of
friendship, he did not let our bond to be vanished from us. Such a friend I had
and he is completely different from any man I had known. I know you would
expect us to be in couple relationship but that did not happen. He is happily
married man with one handsome boy. The specialty of my friendship with him remained
even after his marriage, he did not change. He did not stop being friend with
me. He was the one who kept the bond of our friendship strong, not me. I am that
one lucky woman to have such dedicated and devoted friend whom I can trust
without even seeing. I always thank him internally for being my best friend. I
cannot define the exact bond we have but I assure you that sometimes we have a
bond of friendship that never dies even if we are not seen to each other. He is
my special friend. We had been friends for almost 11 years now. We keep ourselves
connected through Video Chat, Voice Chat and frequent Messages through
messenger.
Can you believe it? After almost 11 years of our friendship,
we met here in Samtse College of Education just few days ago. He is currently
doing Master’s Degree and I came here to complete my Post Graduate Diploma in
Education specifically in English. I did not tell him beforehand that I am coming
to the college deliberately to check whether he can identify me or not but
unfortunately he had known that I was here in the college through my post in
‘My Day’. I could not lie to him anymore after that and I confessed finally
that I am here in college.
He welcomed me with this yummy cake amidst of lock down.
I can’t
describe the feeling of happiness of meeting him. My heartily Message for him, ‘THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING
MOST DEVOTED FRIEND FOR ME, AND I PRAY TO REMAIN AS DEVOTED FRIEND AS YOU
THROUGHOUT.”
